The novel corona virus now christened COVID – 19 was first reported in 2019 in Wuhan, China. Due to its highly contagious nature, it has fast spread to various Asian, European, North American and even some African states. China being the first country where the virus originated from remains the worst hit. There are over 3,000 deaths that have been reported in China and thousands of reported infection cases. There are also serious cases of the disease reported in countries such as Italy, Iran, US, Canada, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan among other nations.

Due to the seriousness of the disease health authorities all over the world have outlined general precautions that everybody is being called upon to adhere to. As things stand there is no vaccine that has been developed that can prevent corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-2019). The only best way to prevent the illness is to avoid exposure to it.

  • Clean your hands often

As per the WHO health guidelines, the best way to prevent the spread of the virus is to maintain the highest standards of hygiene through washing of hands regularly.   • Avoid close contact

The other best way to prevent contracting the corona virus is by avoiding any close contact with any infected person. In case your community is already bearing the brunt of the corona virus, put a distance between yourself and other people. This measure is particularly important if you are any person considered to be at a higher risk of getting very sick.

If you are already sick it is important to stay home or get immediate medical care in a certified medical facility.

When coughing or sneezing it is important to cover your mouth and nose with a clean handkerchief or tissue. Ensure that you throw away the used tissue or handkerchief in the trash can. Immediately wash off your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you are at a place where water and soap is not readily available you can use a hand sanitizer that contains 60% alcohol.

  • If you are sick, wear a face mask

You should wear a face mask when around people if you are sick. This will help to reduce new infection from spreading in your community. If you are not sick, you don’t have to wear a face mask unless you are caring for a sick person.
