Achieve Self-Empowerment through Humor

Achieve Self-Empowerment through Humor

Self-empowerment means you have the confidence to take charge of your own life, and according to a study conducted by Thomas E Ford, a Psychology professor in Western Carolina University confidence is positively correlated with higher self-esteem, humor and ability to acquire more control. Which means, there is a positive correlation between achieving self-empowerment and having a sense of humor. One might also conclude that using the big words makes me sound smart! 😉

Growing up in a conservative country, girls were expected to behave in a certain way. They were expected to stay quiet, sit properly, not give an opinion and generally “not act like boys.”  However, my sister and I were often caught doing the exact opposite. The downside was we may have been social outcasts but fortunately, our parents thought we were smart and funny and they let decided to let us be the way we are.

In today’s competitive world women are encouraged to be ambitious, opinionated, outspoken and basically excel in everything they do, just like men but we still need to work harder. Fortunately, modern parents understand this notion and have eliminated the social barriers while raising their children. However, amid all the stress, I wonder how many parents make a point of raising empowered children with a sense of humor? This is a vital soft-skill that works as a perfect ice-breaker and shows the signs of social ease and confidence.

According to T. Bradford Bitterly, co-author of a new Wharton business school study on the use of humor in professional settings, those who have a good sense of humor are more likely to hold higher leadership positions in the organization. Which means, that humor conveys intelligence. Thus, this soft-skill is required to be successful and to achieve self-empowerment. The best way to help your child acquire self-empowerment is allowing them to think outside of the box, teach them how to take situations lightly and lead by the example.

This is a known fact, life gives you lemons all the time and we are thrown into different stressful situations all the time, which shatters our confidence and self-worth all the time. The best way to survive through everything is proper planning, staying level-headed and sometimes not to take ourselves too seriously.

Sometimes I feel that I am a trouble magnet and tends to make decisions in haste. This trait of mine always attracts some sort of craziness in my life. With constant trial and error, I have learned the best ways to cope-up with all the madness and stress are some drama, followed by contingency measures and finally laughing it out, while going with the flow and learning in the process. Being women, we are entitled to throw a little tantrum in front of friends and family. It keeps the stereotyping alive and happy. Provided, we learn from our mistakes and do not repeat them.

On a serious note, laughter calms us down and give us an ability to lighten things up to think rationally and act. The best way to achieve self-empowerment and success is to use humor and laughter to solve different problems, lighten up the mood and build relations. However, this does not mean that we all need to be standup comedians or simply stop taking our goals and ambitions seriously.
